Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union Receives Massachusetts Performance Excellence Award

June 30, 2005 --- On Thursday, June 30th, the Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union, received the Massachusetts Performance Excellence Award presented by Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey and Dr. Armand V. Feigenbaum. MVFCU has been serving members financial needs in the Merrimack Valley area for over 50 years. During the ceremony, Lieutenant Governor Healy and Dr. Feigenbaum presented MVFCU's President/CEO Peter J. Matthews, Jr. and Chairman of the Board, Michael Sayler, with this prestigious award. The award, named in honor of Dr. Armand V. Feigenbaum and patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, was created by MassExcellence in 1991 to recognize organizations that strive for performance excellence and serve as role models for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Governor Romney and Lt. Governor Healey's focus on jobs, education and healthcare aligns well with the MassExcellence focus on the competitiveness of all Massachusetts organizations.

Each year, MassExcellence, an independent non-profit corporation, evaluates applications from some of the top companies in Massachusetts, utilizing well qualified and trained volunteers that analyze a written application, perform on-site assessments and lastly use a panel of judges to determine who, if any, will be the recipient of the award. The criteria, that of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, are maintained by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, US Department of Commerce.

MVFCU was chosen as the 2005 recipient after careful analysis and scoring in areas such as Leadership, Strategic Planning, Customer and Market Focus, Information and Analysis, Human Resource Focus, Process Management and Business Results. According to CEO/President, Peter J. Matthews, Jr., "Applying for the MassExcellence Award was intended to be a learning experience. The process provided an insightful self-assessment, identifying strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement. There is no room for complacency in a service environment. We're proud to receive the award and will continue to apply the Quality Tools to provide continuous improvement in our internal operations, thus reflecting on the delivery of products and service to our members."

A major benefit of the MassExcellence and National Baldrige Program is to identify and share best practices across industries. MassExcellence plans a Spotlight Event this fall to showcase MVFCU's Best Practices; and also to recognize Winchester Hospital of Winchester, MA, as a showcase for best practices in Staff Focus, and also Perot Systems Healthcare, Quincy, MA, as a showcase for best practices in Customer Focus.
