Several credit unions in the Merrimack Valley participated in the annual Legislative Day sponsored by Merrimack Valley Federal Credit Union on September 25, 2009, at their corporate offices in the Riverwalk in Lawrence.

This was a timely opportunity for representatives of local credit unions to meet with their legislators and express their thoughts regarding the current economy, issues facing their credit unions, and several pieces of legislation pertaining to credit unions.

Merrimack Valley has been hosting its Legislative Day in some form since 1991.  Traditionally, the day is well attended by state representatives and senators because it is a forum for them to meet their constituents.  Merrimack Valley President & CEO Peter Matthews commented about the importance of hosting such a day, “Legislators are faced with thousands and thousands of bills each and every year.  It is incumbent upon us to make sure there is communication, and we are making them aware of the issues that credit unions face.”

This year, State Senator Sue Tucker as well as State Representatives Barry Finegold, Barbara L’Italien and David Torrisi participated.  Also, Congresswoman Niki Tsongas was represented by June Black, Constituent Services Director.  Essex County Sheriff Frank Cousins, Joseph Bevilacqua, president of the Merrimack Valley Chamber of Commerce and Methuen Mayor William Manzi also attended.
